While Huggins & Scott has offered the majority of the 1954 and 1955 Esskay Meats Orioles sets as single lots, a handful of players have eluded our grasps. This previously unknown 1955 Esskay Meats Lou Kretlow complete box is a sight to behold! The “hot dog” collectible is one of a handful of Esskay complete boxes (and first 1955 Kretlow card) to be offered for public sale. Because Kretlow was sold to the Seattle Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League on June 7th, the early season dispatch of the hurler is a possible explanation for its sheer scarcity in comparison to others cards from the issue. Unlike the previous year, when two players were featured on the boxes, the 1955 packaging displayed a redemption coupon that was more valuable to the kids than keeping the box intact, adding to the ultimate scarcity of this relic. The cardboard packaging has withstood the decades in remarkable condition with scant instances of light perimeter creasing and superficial surface blemishes including a well concealed scratch on Kretlow’s cap. Three tabs have sustained expected creasing while the lower left tab does not display any wear. The fun baseball-oriented graphics and redemption coupon are bright and vibrant. Quite possibly, the only complete box displaying a 1955 Kretlow extant.
